So many great leaders will always tell you that when you want to become a really good leader you need to first make it a true choice to become a great leader. In most cases people end up in leadership positions simply by default. Some turn of events make the person end up in a leadership position. People get forced to lead groups without actually being prepared. This can happen at any point in life and is why initiatives like the National Youth Leadership Forum are so good.
Being put in a position of leadership never guarantees that an individual will become a leader that is great. In many cases this can actually make you a really poor leader.
In the event that you find yourself in a leadership position, self-awareness becomes vital. You need to be aware of how good you actually are. Most people think that they are really good but the truth is the exact opposite. Fortunately, you can take active steps toward becoming a great leader.
While there are many things that can be said, the first step you want to take is to become truly self-aware. This is not as easy as it might seem.
Self-awareness means that you need to fully embrace your personality and particular quirks. In many times we see personality quirks as being imperfections or flaws. This is not actually the case when you truly appreciate them and you take them into account. We are never perfect. It is important to understand what we are really good at and what we are bad at. This is basically the only way to improve. Without self-awareness, it is impossible to improve.
So much of your relationship and personality styles are actually inherited. For example, the way in which a family handles stress and conflict during a child’s early years will have a tremendous impact on how stress and conflicts are handled when that child becomes an adult. When the family suppresses the extreme emotions, muted crisis responses truly feel natural. When the family always screams, you can be sure that yelling will be natural for the child.
A big part of being a wonderful leader is to offer really clear instructions that followers can understand and respect. It is so common to notice that leaders believe instructions are clear simply because they clearly understand them. Upon a closer inspection, it can become obvious that people did not actually understand those instructions.
People often do not take action. They are much more inclined to do something in the event that they are backed up by someone. This is even more correct when referring to taking risks. The strong leaders have to encourage people and demonstrate actions that are to be taken in specific situations. This is, again, tied to self-awareness. You need to be able to realize when people do not take action because of your lack of action.
On the whole, it is important to never underestimate the importance of self-awareness for any leader, current or aspiring.
